Very nice.
I guess I will add to the hundreds of other reviews online. It depends on the source dvd how well it upconverts, but all are obviously better with this dvd player. Not quite like watching the matrix in high definition, but very close to most other channels that are broadcast. Again it depends on the quality of the source. Divx/XVID works like a charm and upconverts nicely. Sound it great, just make sure you set it to raw output to send it to your receiver. I have only been watching some older dvd's so I imagine that the newer ones can only get better. Well worth the price.

A Must For Your HDTV
I have a 50" HD 1080i LCD. I owned a Sony 4 year old progressive scan dvd player. cnet rated it 2 best dvd player at that time for under $300. When i bought the LCD television i wasn't happy with the picture. I started looking for something that sends a digital 1080i upconversion to my LCD. Every where I looked, and I looked for days, Oppo came up as the best. I am in shock of all the video and audio formats in can play. Trust me they look great in Divx. I used X-Men Last Stand to compare. First of all no picture noise. The colors are definitely more alive. Put it this way. You can't live without it if u have a HDTelevision. Remember it's not HD-DVD, so don't expect it to look like a HDTV you get from your cable or dish provider. You can tell the quality differnce, but a big deference compared to progressive scan dvd players. Plus all the playback possobilities (divx, HDCD, DVD writeables). I call it the DreamMachine, because everything I have video wise can be played on this player.

Incredible Improvement Over My First $100 Upconverting Player
I was a sceptic, truely. I was one of these people who thought a DVD player is a DVD player, right? Apparently I was very wrong. When I bought my Optoma HD70 I knew that I wanted a player that could upconvert to the Optoma's native 720p resolution. Since I bought a Panasonic SA-XR55S receiver from Amazon I figured I would match it and go with the upconverting Panasonic DVD player the DVD-S52S. At first I thought it looked decent, I was not thrilled. Then my wife came down to have a look. She asked me what was wrong with the picture. I asked her what she meant and she pointed out a LOT of pixelation and noise in the image. She said it just didn't look good. I wondered if it was the projector or the fact that I was projecting on an off white textured wall.
