Panasonic DMR-ES25S DVD Recorder with DV Input with HDMI and SD Card Slot
Panasonic DMR-ES25S DVD Recorder with DV Input with HDMI and SD Card Slot Buy From Amazon.com

Excellent value
This lightweight and inexpensive component is incredibly powerful and capable given that the price would have gotten you only a barebones DVD player just a few years ago. My primary goal is that of transcribing a videotape collection now several decades old to DVD for better archival storage and ease of transport when moving. The DMR-ES25S has a variety of other features, such as the SD Card Slot input, which I've not taken advantage of.

A Simple, good, solid performer
Of course setting up any component is a challenge. Depending upon your tv, cable box, vcr, or surround sound system, you need a bunch of connectors. The HDMI cable and adaptor required, would have cost more than the DVD itself, so I opted for traditional connectors that came with the ES25S. After an hour or so, I was able to playback. Finally I figured out the connection needed to record off the cable box and the tv settings to see the picture as it recorded. So now I get to playback a DVD or record, for far less cost than my old RCA DVD player alone. Isn't technology wonderful? The cost keeps dropping as the features and abilities increase. Most of the reviews for this Panasonic DVD were positive so I gave it a try. So far, so good. Any downsides, besides the connections? Not really. The manual is detailed, if not somewhat confusing at times. But the online diagrams off their website are terrific. Why only 4 stars you ask? Because nothing's perfect, even me.
