VERY sensitive to power fluctuations
| I bought my unit in March. In June we had a brief brownout - lights dimmed for a moment. The unit completely locked up. Phone support couldn't help, had to return it to service. They couldn't fix it, and replaced it after a month's wait. Now 5 months later it's just done it again - the unit's completely locked up. It's still under the 1-year warranty, but I'm regretting the purchase. it's a great machine (if tricky to use) when it works, but it's just too finicky to be practical. Panasonic really should have done a bit more testing in the real world with this item. |

This is a good product
I wouldn't ordinarily write a product review, but this is a good product. Here's how I use it: I've manually programmed it to record to the hard disk drive on a weekly basis the 8 or 9 shows I like to watch. These shows are automatically recorded every week and I watch them whenever I like (even while another or the same show is being recorded), and then delete them. It's that simple, and I don't have to pay any fee to TiVo or the cable company. There's plenty of room on the hard disk (for 34 hours at SP compression). I haven't had more then 8 hours of programming stored on the hard drive at one time in the two months I've had the machine. I set most of my manual recording periods for an extra 5 minutes just to make sure I never miss the very end of a show. And if a show may sometimes be 2 hours long, then I always record 2 hours -- there's plenty of room on the disk. The only time you can't record an extra window around a show is if there's another show right after it that you're also recording.

Complicated... but WORTH IT
The instruction manual is complicated and poorly compiled, lots of symbols and page re-directing, illogical order, etc. At first I was very frustrated. I found Tech Support to be extrememly patient, if not impressively knowledgable. I appreciated their assistance. But mostly I just spent several hours at a time over the course of a couple weeks to learn each feature one at a time. Some things do make sense and can be learned through playing and trial and error.
