Used once and failed
I purchased this as a 2005 Christmas gift for my 77-year-old mother who didn't open the packaging until May 2006 when she first wanted to use it while walking the neighborhood. She installed new batteries (purchased May 2006) and walked around her subdivision once. The next time she went for a walk the unit would not power up. More new batteries were installed. The unit will not work at all. I have installed new batteries that I bought and cannot get the unit to work at all. Being that she waited until warmer weather to use it as she intended, I was unable to return it. I went to Sony's website but unfortunately could not find any way to contact them. I had a difficult time finding one with cassette as well as weather band/Tv band, AM

Great Walkman for on the road usage
I bought this tape Walkman about a year ago (after my previous Sony Model was stolen). I use this unit very heavily when I go on walks, to the Gym, or just am on the road and away from a computer. I listen to Christian Radio, News, Sports and other uses that an iPod will not give me. IPods are cute, but the lack of a built in radio is not attractive. Sure I got plenty of tapes, and recently purchased a 10 pack at Best Buy's. I do a bit of radio recording, so these are nice. Sure it would be more economical to have an iPod in some ways, but they cost an arm and a leg, and not all broadcasts I listen to have Podcasts, and besides I sometimes want a LIVE feed (i.e. sports, weather, traffic). For these uses I'd never dump this unit for an iPod. The battery life on this unit is great and I like the fact that this unit only requires one AA.

Sony WWM-FX290 Stereo Cassette Player
This is a very good cassette player - and, these days, the local stores do not cary many, or no, cassette players - so I am comparing it to my old trusty Sony Walkman that died ... The sound is great with and without the Megabass feature. At first I didn't like the caring case but I got used to it and have no problems with it. On the downside the player doesn't have continuous play, or reverse, feature so, if you'd like to hear music on the reverse side, you have to stop, open the carying case, take the player out and reverse the cassette ... a pain. The window that displays control features is very very small so it is difficult to see the commands. The controls themselves are not very intuitive and I needed directions to set up, or change, the pre-sets but when that was done the player was fun to have and use.
